Sericulture has become a dependable occupation for the unemployed: UoM VC

Mysuru, February 21, 2022 (www.justkannada.in): “Many people lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Many among them returned to their native villages. Sericulture has given a new ray of hope for many among them,” opined Prof. G. Hemanth Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore.
He inaugurated a one-day workshop on DBT Karnataka Skill Science Program and Entrepreneurial Development in Sericulture Science, organized by the Sericulture Department. “Karnataka which is the capital of Biotechnology in the country is a major hub for ancient and developing biotechnology. The state has gained this recognition due to the encouragement given to industries and start-ups. It includes several national and international biotechnological research institutes of repute, private and public universities. New technology should be adopted in the field of sericulture and skills should be developed,” he suggested.
“The biotechnology sector in the state presently comprises 380 small, medium, and large companies and more than 270 start-ups. The State enjoys the pride of housing 60% of the total biotech companies in the country. Thus Karnataka is a major hub of biotechnology. The biotechnological sector is contributing 35% to the country’s income. The biotechnology sector in the state has provided 54% of jobs and is generating a revenue of Rs. 33,351 crore for the state’s exchequer. About 69% men and 31% women entrepreneurs are engaged in this sector,” he explained.
Dr. H. Honnegowda, Dean, JSS Science and Technological University, Rajyotsava award winner Kiranagere Jagadish and Prof. H.B. Manjunath, HoD were present.
