Where’s the dolls of Kannadigas…?

Nagalakshmi Hanumanthappa, who has been in the business of selling dolls in Bengaluru for decades, has a major grouse. She wants to sell dolls with ‘Kannadaness’ which portray Karnataka’s culture, tradition, history, and folklore. But it’s not manufactured. Most of the available dolls come from Tamil Nadu.
She is not referring to the lack of Channapattana toys. She would like to sell clay, paper, Parisian plaster, and colourful cement dolls that reflect the tradition of Karnataka. Her NH Dasara Dolls shop on Gandhi Bazaar main road is 34 years old. This spacious shop in the basement has hundreds of dolls depicting Puranas stories.
She is a very articulate, friendly and smart lady, capable of telling Ramayana and Mahabharatha stories with ease. “Karnataka is not into making Dasara dolls. There are doll-making clusters in Tamil Nadu. It comes from Madurai, Cuddalore, Chennai, Nagercoil, Pondy, etc. These dolls reflect the culture of the Tamils, their traditions and their purnas. Where are the dolls talking about Karnataka’s sthala purnasa? The traditions of our neighbours are very different. The way that we hold sarees, panches or even kumkum on our foreheads differs from others. We have our unique style. We’ve got so many stories from Karnataka. Unfortunately, dolls we sell don’t reflect them. We want our dolls to look like a typical Kannada doll,” she said.

Nagalakshmi’s passion for dolls and mythology with local touch is boundless. She keeps giving ideas for TN craftsmen to make dolls as per her specification. “I downloaded and sent the image of Udupi Krishna to a craftsman. He did clay dolls of Lord Krishna for me. He made Lord Krishna’s clay dolls for me. I likewise sent Purandara Dasa’s and Saint Thyagaraj’s images. I also got a doll-set done with Dasara procession as the theme. Unfortunately, my ideas are stolen and replicated by other artisans. I have lost my exclusivity. I wish artisans in Karnataka would also get into this vocation, “she says.
The price of dolls has increased dramatically for many reasons, including the pandemic. Prices range for a good package of dolls between Rs 1,800 to Rs 30,000. Nagalakshmi’s husband and her 2 engineering graduate daughters help her to do the business. She pays Rs 30,000 rent a month throughout the year, besides taking on rent for a godown to stock the dolls. Not profit, but passion is driving the family to continue with the doll sales.
