SC orders to release accused in former PM Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case
New Delhi, May 18, 2022 (www.justkannada.in): The Hon’ble Supreme Court has issued orders to release Perarivalan, one of the accused in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case.
A.G. Perarivalan was in jail from the last 31 years in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The Supreme Court has ordered to release him. The Supreme Court bench comprising three Jugdes Nageshwar Rao, B.R. Bawai and A.S. Bopanna issued the orders of Wednesday.
The former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, at Sriperambudur in Tamil Nadu during an election rally. He was killed in a female suicide bomber attack.
Perarivalan was 19 years at that time. He is facing charges of assisting former PM Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination mastermind and LTTE leader Shivarasan in purchasing two batteries of 9 volts. These two batteries were used to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.
In 1998, the Anti-terrorism Court had issued orders to hand Perarivalan. The Hon’ble Supreme Court had also upheld this judgement the next year. But in 2014 the apex court converted the hanging orders to life time imprisonment. As the accused has completed 30 years in jail, the apex court had granted bail in the month of March last year.
