MYSORE: ನಾನು ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ “ಲೇಆಫ್” ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಶಾಲೆಯ ನೋಟ್ಬುಕ್ನ ಒಂದು ಮೂಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ್ದೆ.
ಜಾವಾ ಮೋಟಾರ್ಸೈಕಲ್ ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆ ಮುಚ್ಚಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಅಟ್ಲಾಂಟಿಕ್ ಸ್ಪಿನ್ನಿಂಗ್ ಮಿಲ್ನ ಗೇಟ್ಗಳಿಗೆ ತುಕ್ಕು ಹಿಡಿದ ಬೀಗ ಹಾಕಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಜೈ ಬೇರಿಂಗ್ಸ್ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯೂ ಬಾಗಿಲು ಮುಚ್ಚಿತ್ತು. ಆಗ ನನಗೆ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ — “ಲೇಆಫ್” ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಕೇವಲ ಉದ್ಯೋಗವನ್ನಷ್ಟೇ ಕಸಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ; ಅದು ಕನಸುಗಳನ್ನೂ ಚದುರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ನಾನು ಮಧ್ಯಮ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಸುಜಾತಾ ಟೆಕ್ಸ್ಟೈಲ್ಸ್ ಕೂಡ ಮುಚ್ಚಿತು. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಅದೇ ಮಾತು: “ಯೂನಿಯನ್ ಬಂದಿತು… ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಇದೇ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ… ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಮಾಲೀಕ.” ಟಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಓಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು, ಆದರೆ ಕಥೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ — ಕೈಯಿಂದ ದುಡಿಯುವವನು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲೇ ಸಿಲುಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ.
ಆಗ ಅದು ಹಳೆಯ ಕಥೆಯಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಗಳ ಕಥೆ. ಕಬ್ಬಿಣ, ಹತ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಉಕ್ಕಿನ ಕಥೆ.
ನಂತರ ಜಗತ್ತು ಬದಲಾಯಿತು. ಸಾಫ್ಟ್ವೇರ್ ಬಂದಿತು. ನಾವು ಕೋಡ್ ಬರೆಯಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದೆವು. ಎಸಿ ಕೊಠಡಿಗಳು, ಕಾಫಿ, ಲ್ಯಾಪ್ಟಾಪ್ಗಳು. “ಲೇಆಫ್” ಎಂಬ ಪದ ನಿಘಂಟಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಅಳಿದುಹೋಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಭಾವಿಸಿದೆವು.
ಆದರೆ 2023ರಿಂದ ಅದೇ ಪದ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮರಳಿ ಬಂತು… ಹೊಸ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ.
ಒಂದು ಇಮೇಲ್ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ: “ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹುದ್ದೆಯನ್ನು ರದ್ದುಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.” ಸ್ಲ್ಯಾಕ್ ಖಾತೆ ನಿಷ್ಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಲ್ಯಾಪ್ಟಾಪ್ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿಸಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಅದೇ ಜಾವಾ ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಯ ದಿನಗಳ ಭಾವನೆ… ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವೆಂದರೆ ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಯ ಜಾಗವನ್ನು ಈಗ ಒಂದು Zoom ಕರೆ ಆಕ್ರಮಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ.

SUMMARY:
Layoff: One Word, Three Generations
I first read the word “Layoff” in the corner of my primary school notebook. Jawa Motorcycle Factory had shut down. The gates of Atlantic Spinning Mill were locked with a rusted padlock. Also, jai bearings got closed. I didn’t understand then that “Layoff” doesn’t just take away a job… it scatters dreams.
By middle school, Sujatha Textiles closed too. At home, the talk was always the same: “The union came… they show it in movies… worker vs owner.” The reel would spin on TV, and the story never changed — the one who works with his hands always gets stuck in the middle.
Back then, I thought it was an old story. A story of factories. Of iron, cotton, and steel.
Then the world changed. We brought in software. We started writing code. AC rooms, coffee, laptops. We thought the word “Layoff” had been deleted from the dictionary forever.
But since 2023, the same word came back… in a new font.
An email arrives: “Your position has been eliminated.” Slack goes dark. Laptop goes back. The same feeling as Jawa… only the factory was replaced by a Zoom call.
